  6. LINE NUMBERING FILES

  8.    Because so many text analysis utilities refer to the text being analyzed 
  9.    in  terms  of the lines matching a pattern,  and usually list  the  line 
  10.    number of the match,  having a line-numbered reference text may be  most 
  11.    helpful.   PC-TEXT  provides  a simple line numbering  device  for  this 
  12.    purpose.    It will count every line (whether empty or not).   In  other 
  13.    words,   a   double-spaced text file will have the spaces  btween  lines 
  14.    counted as well.   In the unlikely event that your text is double-spaced 
  15.    in  the  file,   use FLEXTEX to remove the  extra  carriage  return  and 
  16.    linefeed.  Be sure to give your numbered file a distinguishing name (ex. 
  17.    FILENAME.NUM).
